DPMA trademark statistics 2024: An overview for entrepreneurs

The German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) has published the latest figures on trademark applications and trademark registrations for 2024, which show a continuing growth trend in increasing application and registration figures. In the past year, a total of 77,221 new German trademarks registered, which is an increase of 2.6 percent corresponds to 2023. The positive trend thus continues, even though the record figures from the corona year 2021 (87,649 registrations) were not reached.

Origin of trademark applications

About 90 percent of trademark applications come from companies based in Germany. The remaining almost 7,000 applications are spread among international applicants, with China with 3,376 registrations is leading. This is followed by the United Kingdom (562), the USA (535) and other countries such as Switzerland (325) and Austria (306).

Registration rate and quality of the application

The brands submitted were scarce 50,000 brands successfully registered, which is a registration rate of 65 percent corresponds. The reason why around a third of the trademark applications were not registered may be that the filings were made by the trademark applicants themselves and therefore without legal advice. Our law firm, on the other hand, has achieved a stable registration rate of over 90 percent, thanks to comprehensive verification of protectability before registration.

Appeal procedure: legal certainty through professional research

In 2024, 2,205 contradictions against registered trademarks, which affects around five percent of all registered trademarks. Oppositions usually arise as a result of conflicts with older, similar trademark rights. Thanks to our thorough trademark search carried out in advance for identical or similar signs, the opposition rate for trademarks registered by our law firm is well below five percent and ensures immediate and long-term legal certainty.

Trademark inventory and processes

At the turn of the year, the DPMA had a total of 897.701 trademark rights in force — a continuous growth that underlines the importance of brands as a competitive advantage and unique selling point. In addition, at this point in time, 53.407 procedures pending, including registration and opposition proceedings as well as trademarks that have already been registered, for which the three-month opposition period is still pending.
